Kathleen's lifelong passion for music began in early childhood when her extraordinary talent for playing melodies by ear captivated those around her. At age three, she started piano lessons with her father and continued her formal training at the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) in 1981 under Peteris Zarins. Her musical education expanded through mentorships with Monika Kasprzak (1986-1992), Lusiana Lukman (1993-1999), and Lynda Metelsky (2008-2009).
Upon completing her Grade 9 RCM certification, Kathleen began teaching at Walter’s Music Studios (1994-1997) and established her private studio in 1996. Her teaching philosophy combines creativity, technical expertise, and humour, ensuring engaging and interactive lessons.
Kathleen earned her Elementary Pedagogy designation with First Class Honours in 2009 and an Elementary Specialist Certificate in 2015. She is currently pursuing her ARCT Diploma in Pedagogy. Additionally, she has developed her vocal skills, studying with Gabriela Rodgers (2018-2023) and Diane Gorun (present).
Beyond teaching, Kathleen's life is a tapestry of diverse interests and accomplishments. She has performed at numerous special events over the years and her varied interests include reading, photography, dance, kayaking, and skiing. A notable accomplishment in 2024 was earning her black stripe belt in ITF Taekwondo, followed by winning gold (Patterns) and silver (Sparring) at the 29th North American Open in Buffalo, NY.
Kathleen is also a Registered Nurse, reflecting her commitment to serving others through her musical instruction and healthcare work. Her broad expertise and enthusiasm for continuous learning highlight her dedication to her students and patients.
